Hey y’all! I’m Letitia, the heart and hands behind NLHG Tie Dye. I’m so excited to share how I started a tie dye business that’s become my creative outlet, my therapy, and a joyful little corner of the internet. If you love one-of-a-kind, handmade tie-dye (or if you’re just curious about how it all works), you’re in the right place. NowI’ll be honest — I never set out to start a business. But somehow, tie-dye found me, and looking back now, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Life just sort of nudged me in this direction, and I’m so glad it did.

So let me tell you how it all got started…

🎨 How It All Started

In 2021, Shawn (my husband) and I were getting ready for a local festival and realized we needed shirts. Instead of buying some, I figured… why not try makin’ our own?

I grabbed a couple of tees, tied up some classic spirals, and used liquid dye to color them. When they came out of the wash — I couldn’t believe it. The colors were bold and bright, and honestly… I was hooked.

What really surprised me? People loved them. Friends and family started asking where we got them. And when we said, “We made these,” the response was almost always: “Y’all need to be selling these!”

So we gave it a shot.

And somewhere along the way, I realized it was more than just a fun little project. I’ve got back issues and Carpal Tunnel, so finding something that lets me sit, stand, move around, or rest when I need to — that was huge. Tie-dye became my creative outlet, my therapy, and something I could do without pushin’ myself too hard.

Turns out, I’d found the kind of art that worked with me — not against me.

💬 From Hobby to Business

What started as “just a few shirts” quickly turned into somethin’ bigger. After that first batch, we kept goin’ — trying new color combos, experimenting with different folds, and makin’ more just for fun.

Friends and family wanted their own, and they weren’t shy about sayin’ it either. “You really oughta be sellin’ these!” they told us.

We didn’t have a plan at first, but their encouragement stuck with us. With help from my dad and my brother, Steve, we pulled together enough money to buy a good batch of supplies and set up our very first vendor table.

That’s when it all started to click.

From there, folks we didn’t even know started askin’ about our shirts — people at events, shoppers passing by, even some online once we shared photos. That little idea grew into a real business before we even realized it.

And that’s how NLHG Tie Dye came to life. 💙
Not from some big plan — just a little courage, a lot of color, and the folks who believed in us from the start.

👕 A Team Effort

I may be the artist behind most of the designs, but Shawn is a huge part of this too. I usually handle the color planning, folding, and tying — picking blends that flow just right and making sure every piece feels special in its own way. 🎨 I love watching the patterns come to life from the very start, even when my hands are covered in dye!

Shawn jumps in with tying when I need him, helps with some dyeing, and handles the washout process — which is no joke. 💦 Getting all that excess dye out without messing up the pattern takes patience, and he’s got it down to a science.

Fun fact — Shawn is color blind. 👀❌🌈
And you’d think that would make tie-dye tricky, but honestly? It’s turned into one of our secret strengths. He puts colors together in ways I’d never think of, and some of our most unique pieces have come straight from his combos. 💙💥

But our favorite part? The final reveal.
After all the folding, dyeing, rinsing, and washing, we finally get to see what we made — and let me tell you…
It’s like Christmas morning, every single time. 🎁✨
